Description

When this challenge came out I misunderstood and was posting individual images. Those previous two may have been my #1 and #2 for the year but with this opportunity to showcase other shots I started going back through the archives of 2024 and came up with many others.

Looking back this was a pretty good and productive year in many respects. As usual much of my work is done in our garden which continues to give me so many opportunities. But my master gardener (my wife Chrissy) did a lot more this year with cacti and succulents. We had a good crop of hibiscus, day lilies, iris, gerberas and others but the new stuff was a refreshing addition.

I also transitioned from doing most of my macro and flora work with my venerable Minolta 200mm macro to the FE 70-200 using extension tubes. I used to hate using tubes on zooms because of having to readjust focus with every slight focal length change but the AF features and accuracy of this lens coupled with my A7rIII fixed that aggravation. The 200mm now plays the role of a kindly grandfather who can still get out and do some work but is enjoying his retirement.

I finally knuckled under and explored the world of serious stacking. I was a single capture guy since growing up with slides and having to get the capture right. Velvia was a hard task master but it taught me to attend to detail in the capture. I still enjoy the challenge of getting the initial capture right and the attendant experience of the moment much more than the processing part of imaging but I’m slowly softening.

We used to get a lot of butterflies in the garden both nectaring and hosting caterpillars but that activity has waned quite a bit in the past few years. We do still have a lot of dragonfly action and I discovered a local water garden late in the year where the dragonflies are plentiful and various. The water lily season was pretty much over but I’m really looking forward to the spring and even to the possibility of planting water lilies in our own pond.

I started drone photography last year and earned an incomplete grade since I managed to crash and lose my first drone midway through my 2023 Oregon coast trip. I got back there in October and did much better. Still have a lot to learn with the drone and am mostly shooting stills but hoping to get into the videography possibilities in 2025.

I want to give special thanks to Shirley Freeman and Kristen Smith for all the help they give me as a moderator. If truth be told these ladies have done most of the heavy lifting this year and I’m grateful for their friendship, guidance and participation. May all of you have great subjects and even better light in 2025.>=))>

What a fantastic year for you, Bill. Your (and Chrissy) garden is envious and I can see why it would be such a wonderful haven for you. Lucky you! These photos are all a beautiful example of your changes and experiments and I for one can’t wait to see what next year brings for you. I can’t possible pick a favorite, but I do so love the cactus images. Thanks for sharing with us.

Bill, I’ve been hoping you’d have a chance to post your favorites; I was really looking forward to it!
These, of course, are all exceptional and definitely “your” notable style.
The hydra shots are especially impressive, and I’m hoping to keep one alive somedaay.
We enjoyed meeting you during your Oregon trek, and hope we can repeat next year with a little more time.
Merry Christmas, and wishes for a rewarding and peaceful 2025, with great Light!

I’ve really enjoyed your cacti and succulents this year, Bill. Kudos to your wife for keeping up the garden. I think my favorite is “Nestled”.

Outstanding collection, Bill. Soft Landing, Stand Up Guy and Living Dangerously are my favorites. AndI really appreciate reading about the more personal side of your life and photography.

What a great collection Bill. I love the tiny leaf on the huge leaf, and the last dragonfly closeup best.

Fantastic – each alone and as a collection! Wonderful variety but unified by your special touch! I’ll vote for the drone shot because it is so unique! I do have a fondness for aerials and am still trying to fit a drone into my set of toys.

Woo hoo for another odonate aficionado! Love those and especially Hurry Sundown. Sorry about the lost drone, but glad you persevered. Your garden is a wonder and a joy for more that just you & Chrissy, so get back out there as soon as it suits. Soft Landing is also tremendous…I think I must have missed it the first time out. Here’s to what you’ll treat us to in 2025.

Bill, indeed a fine collection all of which are great. I did chuckle of the Blue Dasher obelisking on the lily. It such a standard position where the perch makes it special. The details in your macro shots all look great, even as the cacti look very prickly…poor snail…

Excellent work on these, Bill. I remember a fair share of them, but you snuck in some extras and they’re are all of stellar quality. I think you had a very good year photographically and hope you do as well or better in 2025.

Hi Bill,
This is a beautiful collection of favorites for the year! After viewing these images it appears as though your garden has brought much joy to both you and your wife. It has to be a nice feeling to have a bountiful amount of subjects so close at hand to photograph. My two favorites are Mob Scene and Nestled as they give the viewer an intimate look at the amazing world of cacti. I had some succulents many years ago and these make me want to try my hand again.

Such a great set Bill! It won’t be right away, but you’ve really inspired me to step up to a drone of these days. As always, I love your other images too! Happy Holidays!

I love to photograph cacti, succulents, and water lilies. The first being such interesting subjects with great texture, and the lilies being so pretty and supporting so many happy little flying things. I am a little jealous of your backyard. Soft Landing really caught my eye as well. Beautifully done. Heceta Head is a lovely location, but it is challenging to get a nice image of the location with the light, which of course you have solved with the drone. Thanks for sharing these!

As was @SandyR-B, I was hoping you would post your 2024 favorites. What a remarkable collection. The blooms in “Dueling Duets” remind me of the Bitterroot we have around here. “Standup Guy” stands out for me.
