A cool kind of shadow

Image(s)

Image Description

On a hot day we relish a bit of shade. In my three decade career I taught people all over the world to “Think Thermally” as they used their long-wave infrared cameras, mainly for industrial maintenance. This image, made several years ago but similar to what I saw in our very warm summer this year, shows people sitting in the cool shade (purple) of a tree where the temperatures are in the mid- to low-80°s (F). The plaza around the tree (yellow/orange) is well over 100°F with the crosshair temperature showing 117°F. The bit of green shows temperatures in excess of 135°F. The bit of gray in the upper left is an area colder than 83°F. Even on a hot day like this, the clear sky is just a few degrees above absolute zero! No need for a fancy camera to know where to sit that day!

Fluke Ti, 120x240 resolution. Note: this camera senses in the 8-12 micron region, very different that the infrared images we often see here. These heat-sensing systems detect primarily emitted energy rather than only reflected.
