A Morning Stretch

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was trying to see what fast shutter speeds would do to the falling water in my water feature, when I started seeing the trees reflected. While I see the horizontal reflections routinely, this was my first notice of the vertical views. Imagine my surprise when the vertical reflections where gone during a revisit. It tooks some testing, but I finally realized that to see the vertical reflections, the falls had to be in shade while the trees were catching the sun. In the beauty of hindsight, that is also when you get the best color and detail in any water reflection.

Specific Feedback

The area covered is between 2 and 3 inches tall, so I was nearing life size magnification. The tree reflections change constantly so this is a fire off several shots and pick the one I like best effort.

Technical Details

R5, 180 mm macro, 1/400 s, f/13, iso 6400, tripod and AI noise reduction in Lightroom Classic.

Very cool discovery, Mark. I really like the one you chose and the way it distorted the tree reflections.

Mark, a wild look here. Hard to imagine the coverage was only 2-3 inches overall view as the scene seems huge. Well seen and photographed. Only thought for minor change was on the very large version the upper edge could be cropped maybe to eliminate the dark parts there. Just a thought… :+1:

EDIT: Maybe do a Content Aware or Clone as @Bonnie_Lampley mentions on that dark area…

Oooh, very nice! I’m with Paul on that dark blob at the top. Maybe clone it out, if you’re ok with that. Maybe dodge it a bit? I’m thinking you wouldn’t want to crop it out because that little V of branches at the top is nice.

Love this, Mark! The colors and distortion are interesting. Just enough to know what we are seeing. I like the idea of removing the blob at the top. It’s the second thing I saw and I kept trying not to see it—to no avail.

Mark: I’m with @Bonnie_Lampley regarding the dark blob on the top edge. Seems like an easy fix for simple AI replace. Your typical great vision and a fascinating result. >=))>

Oh, very nice, Mark! That makes sense about the lighting on the trees and the water in the shade. Your water and ice shots are such a treat.
