Falls Close-up #1

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was exploring close up views of the water fall that’s the beginning of my backyard water feature (since it was too windy for spring flower photography…). Eventually I found one area that showed fine ripples and colors, so I fired off a large number of shots. The ripples are created by string algae with small clumps of “something” at the end. You can see the ends and parts of one long string up towards the top.

Specific Feedback

The mix of colors from behind (leaves, stone and algae), some sky reflections and all the ripples were what caught my attention. I wanted a fast shutter to freeze the water motion, which lets the ripples stand out. I was quite close, as this view covers between 3 and 4 inches tall

Technical Details

R5, 180mm macro, 1/1600 s, f/8, iso 6400, tripod.

I love this image. The variations of the colors and ripples really work for me. The only thing I could suggest is playing with the orientation to see if another angle is stronger. This is so abstract it doesn’t have to sit a certain way.

Another fantastic close up of water, Mark. I never get tired of these. Such interesting abstracts, and never the same! I can imagine this being cropped into two completely different images. To be clear, I’m not saying it should be, just that it could be a top-half horizontal or nearly square comp and a bottom half horizontal or nearly square comp.

Wonderfully seen and captured!

Mark,

Very cool. I like the portion of the photo where the ripple crisscross each other creating a light and dark pattern. It is amazing how the water bends the light to crete those patterns.

Another very cool abstract from your ever fruitful ponds, Mark.

Wow, I think I like this one even better, Mark. You sure capture some neat abstracts in water and ice.

Mark: Great abstract and nirvana for a color junkie. I might be tempted to crop a touch from the left to fill the frame with the ripples. Fantastically unique image. >=))>

Thats a really intriguing and beguiling picture very much like the distorted colours found reflecting in a glass vase, but with water, motion of the colours adds another level of intrigue. Very enjoyable and I agree wholeheartedly with Bill, crop in a little and make it all about abstract colour with little in the way of visual clues to enable the viewer to discern what it is.

I find myself thinking of stained glass. That’s a compliment.
