A Sunday stroll

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This marsh is not far from a small river, where I walk around once in a while. @holgermischke might recognize the spot, he lives close by.
I liked the greens and the sky above the scene.
Photographing wasn’t the goal of the walk, that was being outdoors. But I carried a camera and I challenged myself a bit by taking only a single prime lens.

Specific Feedback

This is the whole frame, no crop. Because I had no zoom lens, I had to check carefully where to place myself and what to include. What is your opinion?
The image is a bit blue, but I deliberately didn’t correct that, because I like the mood.
I like to read your comments!

Technical Details

Pentax K3 Mk. III, Pentax 2.0/35mm lens (approx. 54mm FF equivalent), f/11, 1/400s, ISO400.
Increased contrast in the sky in DxO PL6, small changes in curves.

Nice, pleasant scene with a good composition. The only thing I might do, would be to darken the FG water a little, since it’s a lot brighter than the sky.

I think you placed yourself perfectly. The cool, gentle colors and symmetric framing gives a very restful feel. Looks good to me!

I like the peaceful feeling of this image, Han. However, as with many images like this, when the sky is so bright, and you try to expose for the details there, the rest of the image can become too dark. This is a perfect case for either bracketing for HDR or simply for blending exposure in Photoshop, if you know how to do that. Or, you might try opening up the shadows a bit on this image, so that the details in the tree line might be seen more.

Han, this is a nicely bucolic scene, with lovely spring greens in the foreground. I like your comp. and don’t think it’s too blue. I agree with Brenda, that opening up the trees slightly might be good.

Han,

What a lovely and quiet, peaceful landscape. I think you’ve composed this beautifully as the eye is able to be drawn in to the scene allowing the viewer to explore the entire frame. This is also nicely balanced with the main elements not competing with each other; ie. just enough water (and cloud texture included) at the bottom. the tufts of grass in the water as well as the larger grasses left and right - with an opening to allow the eye in further. I think you were fortunate and recognized this - about the upper sky/clouds. For me, I think the sky brightness and overall exposure and light look very good.

The only suggestion I have would be to dodge and/or improve the contrast in the larger green tufts of grasses on both sides; they look a little flat to me. But then again, the overall scene is overcast/diffused light, so this also looks quite natural.

Thanks for sharing

Hi Han,
I quite like this as it has a serene vibe to it that I find inviting. It shows that you took the time to compose this because the elements are nicely balanced in the scene. I too am enjoying the blue tones, especially those in that wonderful sky. I could see the reflection in the water just a little darker as it looks to be about the same tonality as the sky. Very nicely done.
