Image Description

I made this image on one of those miraculous days when all things come together. The water in this reservoir fluctuates frequently, sometimes leaving it unapproachable as it floods the surrounding shore. A very cold night in early December had produced a thin layer of ice, and then the water levels dropped a foot, causing the ice to be suspended. I could not walk on the reservoir itself, but the mostly accessible shoreline was a wonderland of ice. Further, the temperature was such that much of the ice re-crystalized and, where very thin, sublimated and then refroze or just disappeared. The only two problems I encountered were keeping batteries and fingers warm and not destroying the next amazing image with a false step. The next morning all was gone but that day I made over a hundred images many of which I’ve enjoyed sharing.

This caught my eye. I love to photograph ice when I can find it. There’s so much to like about this image. The textures and lines are so nice and you’ve composed them well within the frame. I especially love the peek at the forest floor through the openings in the ice.

@Chris_Baird these chilly mornings in Vermont bring a mix of sadness to see summer go and joyful expectation of temperatures cold enough to freeze water! Thanks for your comments and I wish you great times outside no matter the conditions.
