A Winter's Day

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This image was made last winter. It was a cold, dreary day, but the colors in the landscape — the lake with the rusty field and leafless trees — seemed like a good subject for ICM.

Specific Feedback

Is it a worthy ICM image?! Any and all feedback is welcome. Thanks!

Technical Details

Canon EOS RP; 70-200 lens; ISO 200, f/32, 1.3 seconds.

This works for me,Susanna. I’m not sure about winter, but it has a real foreboding feel with the dark sky and heavy shadow on the water. Very effective.

The sky is very foreboding, but it’s offset by the brightness of the water. Lovely!

This definitely is a worthy image! I really like the contrasting warm and cool colors. And the mood it presents is also nice (hard to think of foreboding as nice :grinning:). Well done!

Thanks so much, @Steve_Kennedy, @Dennis_Plank, @Bonnie_Lampley for your input! We were having a really dreary winter here in the mountains when I shot this. When I moved here almost 30 years ago, we had a lot of snow. Now, we have very little, and on overcast days, it can look like this! Perhaps I should call it “A Dreary Winter Day”!

“Storm on the Horizon” is what I saw in the image, Susanna. I could almost see an old sailing ship in the calm water just about to be clobbered or perhaps already dismasted and just adrift and at the mercy of the incoming storm.

Yes Susann, this works quite well as an ICM image. Love the layers and the contrast of light and dark in the photo. I get this ominous feeling from the shadows but then there is the light that brings calm and reassurance. The movement is just right. Wonderful work!

Thanks so much, Alfredo!

Susanna,

A bit late, but wanted to comment.

I find this quite dark (mood) and forboding. Along the line of Dennis’ comments, I get the distinct impression of a photograph - or painting from the 19th century, perhaps in a maritime museum as I too imagine sailing ships with their masts - and no sail… just doomed in the storm. I guess the water could be further darkened or toned (like sepia…) to further that mood.

For sure this is very dark, mysterious and triggers the imagination.

Thanks, @Lon_Overacker for your feedback! Yes, it is a dark image, but the light water helps to moderate that for me. But, I could darken it a bit to tie in more with the rest of it. It does feel a little JMW Turner-ish now that I think of it!
