Alocasia bloom

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have several of these and have never caught a flower before it faded away. This is day 2 of this one – I got it on day 1 as well but it wasn’t quite as interesting. The lighting was frustrating and I had to put a piece of kraft paper behind it to get a decent BG.

Focus stack. Only very slight tweak in LR then into Zerene. The result into PS for NR, crop and a few masked curves for balancing the light better.

Diane: What an interesting bloom this is. I’m not sure I’ve seen one before. Good call on the BG; one would never be able to tell. Nice find and a superb capture and presentation. >=))>

I also don’t think I’ve seen one before. Striking. I don’t see how you could have done it better.

I’ve never seen or heard of this critter before, Diane. A very interesting bloom and the Kraft paper makes a good background.

Ummmmmm… isn’t this an x-rayed site?
Very cool flower I’ve never seen, with marvelous soft colours and perfect BG.
Great find and excellent presentation!

This is pretty darn weird. I like it. Reminds me a lot of Jack in the Pulpit which grows like weeds in some places up this way. Not sure how else to shoot it and I would probably be still standing there scratching my head. One thing you could try here is to increase the contrast between the paler, backlit parts and the thicker shaded parts that aren’t as lit up.

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank, @SandyR-B and @Kris_Smith! This one drove me nuts, getting room light to give it some shape, and trying to tweak the shooting direction. (It’s in a window pot – could be moved but I liked the natural backlight through the translucence, which never seems to translate to a capture.) I do think I should play with contrast more – I was going back and forth on settings and apparently not getting the right ones, although I basically tried everything. And B/W didn’t work at all.

I need to finish fiddling over the one I shot the day before – it is slightly more modestly dressed. Only slightly.
