American Bison

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I always enjoy experimenting behind the lens, and playing around with snow, bison, and long exposures is nothing new for me. But this time I wanted to try something a little different.

We had a huge herd of bison passing in front of us while the snow was falling. I wanted to focus on the falling snow, lengthening it with the slow shutter speed, but I also was hoping to capture the bison specifically out of focus while maintaining the recognizable silhouette. The OOF look reminds me of the ancient cave paintings found in Europe.

I felt color was more effective than black and white here, and the foreground sage added a nice complementary tone and texture to balance the frame.

I like this experiment! I like the OOF and the length of the falling snow. It almost looks like scratches, but it’s clear what it is, I just like it.
I also like the OOF sage in the foreground, but I wish there were a little more room at the top, and more space for the bison to be walking into. Although it does get the feeling of hunkering down in the storm.
Nice experiment!

Max, I like this a lot1 It’s fun to play around with a new idea.
I’d like to see the bison further left in the frame, though.
The streaky snow and muted bison work well.
Successful experiment , imo!

A beautiful and successful experiment, appears to be competition stuff.
Personally, I would prefer the bison to be lower in the frame.

Max: a very good experimental effort. My only suggestion would be to de-center the bison by adding more room on the right.
