American Robin

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Another from last week – the Robins perch in this tree to watch for bugs in the small winter creek below it. We’ve had enough late rain that there is still some water and a lot of damp soil rich in juicy bugs. The tree is downhill from my blind so I get an eye-level view.

Technical Details

Minor global tonal tweaks in LR, then into PS for Topaz Denoise and a little intrusive branch pruning. Cropped to about 50%.

Nice perch and heat turn, Diane. Good to see another robin and this angle isn’t one we see often. I like the slightly spread wing.

Diane, this bird is quite grey, so I’m guessing that it’s a female. I have a male (who’s almost black) that has a particular site where he likes to drink, but it’s partly obscurred from my blind, so no pics…yet… The pose and the details in the feathers look good.

Thanks, @Mark_Seaver – I also assume a female, although I don’t know when the first year males get their darker feathers. In my very limited experience, the males seem to be darker mostly on the head.

I had a couple of fledglings/juveniles last year, so hoping for more.

Hi Diane, love the pose with the head turn towards us. I didn’t know males were darker this time of year so that’s good information. Interesting angle on the bird.
