Description

This Great Blue Heron was fishing in a shallow pond that was covered in Duckweed. It let me get fairly close, so I could get a full sequence of it’s attack and the aftermath. This is a 7 shot sequence showing the small (maybe 2") fish wiggling free and the Heron’s response…

Hi Mark. I really like this sequence. It’s amazing that the heron was able to grab this fish again. Detail and composition in all the shots looks very good.

Wow, Mark, these are really great. The GB sure was determined to have that little fish for dinner. He is quite talented, and to even be able to have seen it in the water with all that Duckweed to begin with is amazing. Great sequence of shot.

Great catch! For you and the bird! My faves are #4, 5 and 6 out of the 7. The mud and water from the beak are amazing. I think the DOF is well done.
Getting the blanket of colour behind the bird is quite magical too. And I am glad there is nice detail in the feathers on its back. I think these shots earn 10/10…seeing more of the legs would take it to 11/10.

Outstanding series, Mark. The Duckweed makes for a perfect backdrop. Nicely done.

Wonderful sequence! Amazing how little its body moves until the final stab.

Wonderful sequence Mark. Amazing how they keep up with their prey like this. The duckweed environment makes for great surroundings for these images. Makes me wonder how they can catch anything in there. Well done!

Outstanding series with great subject matter and color. I like the action!
