Little Blue Heron in flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On our last day at the rookery, the weather turned mostly sunny and we had the opportunity to photograph Little Blue Herons flying around as they hunted for crawfish.

Specific Feedback

I did not manipulate the BG color specifically in these shots but they still did not turn out completely uniform. I really don’t intend to use these as a series. Any thoughts on the BG?

Very good flight shots of this species, Allen. I like all three for the various poses. If you wanted to do a series, the second and third seem to be pretty close in background color, while the first looks a little cooler. Personally, I think the color in the first works a bit better with the heron colors.

Excellent series of images. Enjoyable wing placement and I like the comp on all. First image is my favorite because of the color and grasses.

All very nice, but I prefer the second over the others. It is slightly more dynamic than the others due to the pose that you captured. I do like the color of the first image–cooler and the pose shows off the subtle change in color across the body of the heron. The third pose is very interesting and wish that the eyes would be more visible. All images are worthy of being in a portfolio as they are sharp and exposed perfectkly. Great series…Jim

Woo hoo! Fantastic look at the way these guys manipulate their feathers to land so precisely. Each one is so sharp and has great wing position. I like the second for the way it shows the peachy/rose color in the neck and face. The third is fun - love those legs. The first could be warmed up IMO and maybe the mid tones lifted a scosh as well. It looks to be in flatter light so maybe could use a bit of sparkle. Terrific series and so well executed.
