An old one

I’ve enjoyed this tree, an American Elm, for over fifty years. In that time dozens and dozens of other large Elms have succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. This one shows remarkable resistance as there are many smaller Elms nearby that have also died. We used a sonic device to estimate the age—170 years old—and just had an talented young arborist spend two days in the canopy cleaning out small dead branches. It is a challenge to photograph because it is so large and right on a street (with nearby wires and powerlines) in our small town. I hug it whenever I walk by!
