Self Critique

I like the movement of the swirl. The two different textures are what challenged me to emphasize them. I wanted to convey the rather delicate nature of the leaves since they are almost white. I’m not too fond of the darker area at the leaf margins in the upper left. I worked with it but am still not satisfied.

Creative direction

I want the idea of movement to suggest wings taking flight from the earth. The choice of color was to add a glow to the overall look. The name is meant to elicit thoughts about the reality of the majestic world that we can not see.

Specific Feedback

Does the image convey an otherworldly reality? Feedback on all aspects–aesthetic, conceptual, emotional, and technical --would be appreciated.

Technical Details

Sony a7iv with a macro lens. ISO 250 F/22 at 4 sec.
Processed in LR then PS with Topaz DeNoise , then luminosity masking to color balance. The artistic work was done using the blur- distort- twirl filter.

Description

I posted the Angle Wings photo and was encouraged to turn it into an abstract image. Thanks to @Dennis_Plank and @Mark_Seaver, I took the challenge.

I see your issue with the dark area, Barbara, but my mind is kind of interpreting it as she shadow of the wing on the ground. I could see lightening it a bit. The tool I’ve found best for that kind of work is the local adjustment brush in LR-it’s just so flexible. I certainly get the ethereal feel from this image and I do love that curve. to my eye, some of the textures in the upper left and lower right start to look just a little coarse for the feel that I think you’re trying to convey. I’m not sure exactly how that can be fixed unless you steal some from elsewhere in the image or from the original.

This is really nice work and I loved it as soon as I saw it.

Great image! I get a yin-yang feel from the abstract version where the two parts of it are divided by light/dark and by texture. I also like the implied movement of the textured patterns in the two parts. I also like the original, completely different but also good.

Hi Barbara, I love the swirling pattern and ethereal qualities of the abstract image. Fascinating abstract! Yes the image reminds me of wings but also of a rolling wave. I can’t help but see similarities to the famous Japanese woodblock print “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” also known as “The Great Wave” artist Katsushika Hokusai.

To help address your concern over that area with the darker luminosity and help accentuate the patterns, I cropped your abstract image to 1:1 and rotated slightly. Let me know what you think.

Alfredo, the crop is precisely what the image needed. It also addressed the problem that @Dennis_Plank mentioned about the coarser textures at the edges. I am much happier with what you have done.

Very cool!! Angel Wings is a fascinating plant! This one does look like an ocean wave!

Thanks, I am not done working with it.

Excellent! The paint never dries…

That’s great to hear Barbara!
