Anna's Hummingbird

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The light was icky today, with heavy fog until late afternoon, but I’m trying to perfect a setup where granddaughter Wylie can shoot them with my camera. She’s into anything nature (and very inquisitive and knowledgeable for an 8-year-old) and has been trying to shoot them with her mom’s iPhone with no success. This location is in the shade of the house except early summer mornings but it’s convenient and the BG (trees 200 ft away) isn’t bad and there is a little color this time of year.

Yesterday she had her first shot at it, with the camera set in P mode and JPEG, and she did very well and had a great time, sitting there for over 2 hours before the light gave out. I’m about to post one of hers in the Discussion I started about a suitable camera for her.

Very nice flight image of this hummingbird, Diane. It looks like it should be a good setup. Never having children, let alone grandchildren, I’ll probably be pretty useless on the proper camera discussion, though I think hand size is really the critical issue.

Great flight pose and detail, Diane, especially at 1/320. Like the background as well.

Well done! This is a superb image is wonderful wing blur. I hope your grandchild gets an interest in photography…

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank, @Allen_Brooks and @David_Schoen! Yes, she’ll need a scaled-down camera, and the Canon R10 looked very impressive at our local camera store. I’ll give it a few months to see if her interest holds up, and maybe target a birthday gift in April. She’s a busy kid with the curriculum of an academic private school and lots of extracurricular activities.

Very nice Diane. Terrific sharpness on the head where it counts. Fine colors throughout and a pleasing background. Also like the motion blur showing the action of the hummer.

Thanks, @Allen_Sparks! I love it when I luck out with a pleasing blur.
