Another gift from Zion

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was wandering around Zion in bliss after a light rain had stopped. The canyon wall colors exploaded in intensity after they often do when wet. This segment reminded me of an abstract expressionist painting.

Specific Feedback

My emotion when looking at this is delight and awe. I love abstract expressionist painting and this is the best!

Technical Details

Hand held, Canon 5dIV, Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens, edited in Photoshop with slight bump up of contrast and vibrance

Very cool image and nicely seen. Looks like the bottom portion is a reflection in water? If you rotate the image CCW you can clearly see what looks like a man sitting.

You’re kidding us – you actually shot this at MOMA – right?? And I saw the man – would be cool to present it rotated. Definitely an abstract, in the best sense. I love the colors and the brush strokes!

That must have been a amazing day!

Awesome. I love this kind of thing too, Tony. I don’t think that is reflection and water at the bottom. Is it? Just a water line where color shifts a bit?

This is one of those images where I can imagine several others within it, and that 5DIV is a cropmaster in my opinion (take half the frame and still have a very fine image).

So, in case it interests you, here are several options within the one presented. As is, it’s lovely, but it is a little left side heavy in some ways. And sometimes I don’t like it when an image of my own has something recognizable in it unless that recognizable thing was the purpose of the image.

I hope you enjoy these in the spirit in which they were offered, which is pure curiosity and a desire to separate “the man” from an otherwise very abstract impression.

You were very alert to notice this, Tony, and it makes for an intriguing composition.

Wow! Amazing expressionist painting! I absolutely love it as-is and I agree with @Marylynne_Diggs that there are so many possibilities in it. In addition to Sitting Man, I also imagine white animal at the top, on the far bank, about 1/3 from the left edge. Maybe it’s a white wolf?

This is not a water reflection…all canyon wall. And based on the fascinating crops and comments, a great rorschach test! Thanks.

Well seen. For me, it conveys the excitement and wonder that you describe feeling at the moment. The flows of white give a feeling of motion like waterfalls, but is really only static rock. Probably a koan in this.

I was pulled a bit to the right edge, and found I wanted to color burn that a bit with a rust hue.

Tony: My first impression of the thumbnail was that it was a reflection but the large version belies that and IMO makes this more compelling. Seeing all the subtle textures as well as the color display makes this really good for me. Well seen and superbly captured and presented. Congrats on a well deserved EP.>=))>
