Barred Owl Composite

Was photographing adult barred owls and their owlets a few years ago. While hunting, one of the adults flew in and landed too close for me to get it all in one frame. I turned my camera vertically and took several shots so that I could stitch multiple ones together in post. This is a two shot vertical pano.

Techs:

D3s
700mm
1/250
f/5.6
ISO 3200

Shot from my car on a beanbag. In post, I resized and sharpened the bird. I also cloned out a few impeding branches. Finally, I selected the bird and ran a levels adjustment because it was a little dark. All feedback welcome.

Hi Lyle, you did a nice job with the stitching - I’ve looked to see where you blended the two photos and I can’t find it. Details are nice too. I like those big ole eyes - some of the ones I took there looked like they were half asleep. A nit to me is that there seems to be a selection halo at the very bottom of the tail feathers - I’d give that a second look. Well done.

Whoops! Late night editing session got the better of me. Have to refine that levels mask!

Superb shot with excellent pose and detail. I also noticed the cloning/masking issue in the bottom left-hand corner.

Very quick thinking to do a pano, Lyle. It came out very well. The lower left corner does draw my eye-I’d be tempted to do some cloning there.

Quick thinking was also what came to my mind when reading your description. Great job with it!

Great job stitching! I agree that the bottom left is a tad distracting, but for the most part the owls eyes hold my attention. I also find the branch coming out of his head on top is mildly distracting, but that may just be me.
