Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I was at Newport Beach sitting on the sand near the shoreline waiting for the birds to come by. This marbled-Godwit found a big sand crab and maybe it was a bit too large for this bird. It took a while to sallow this crab.
Specific Feedback
Taken near sunset, lighting always on my mind. Was DOF ok, soft in back of the bird
Technical Details
Canon r5 ii with rf 200-800mm at 637mm f/9 1/2500 ISO 1600 HH. pre-continuous was on

Very cool image, Dean. The lighting really works on this image and I like the composition, though I could see a bit more room all around if you have it. The line of the wave is a very nice touch.
Thanks for the feedback, @Dennis_Plank . I had some more room, not a lot, but it helped. Thanks
That little extra on the top helped a lot, Dean. It doesn’t look like the bird’s going to bump it’s head now.
Good timing to get the crab in the mouth, Dean. Good detail and handling of the nice light you had. Also, I like the water action and the context it gives the image. I’m wondering about the ID; the beak seems too short for a Godwit, maybe a Willet?
I was not sure of the bird. I have this bird identify app where I take a picture of it. Not sure how well it works
I like the image, but from the description others are seeing, there’s a crab in the mouth. The images I have don’t show a crab in the mouth, but an open beak and they are identical images. So I don’t know what happened. But I agree that it is probably a willet. The lighting is pretty good though.
The crab is actually at the very end right at his throat just before he swallowed it. I had the whole series of it and maybe I should’ve picked one where the crab was a little bit further out, but I thought it was interesting that his eyes were closed as he finishes, swallowing the crab.
This does look like a willet. Marbled godwits are large by shorebird standards and have a slightly upturned, bicolored bill. Repost is excellent and I like the pose. Well done…Jim
Thanks all for the feedback. I use Merlin Bird Id app
I’m trying to learn the birds. Getting better overtime.
I’m very happy about the comments. I think the repost is much better.
