Welcome to NPN Gordon! I’m not an Avian expert; they’ll comment I’m sure on this. Just a couple of things I noticed. If you’re using Lightroom or Photoshop (or other software) I’d say the crashing wave is too white and you could try reducing the Highlights there if possible. The other thing that caught my eye is the saturation. In this case I like the bright, very saturated colors. The contrast between beach and sea is interesting. But the bird (and its shadow) makes this shot for me. I look forward to more from you.
Hello Gordon. Welcome to our community. Look forward to see some more images from you so we can all grow as photographers together. And please participate by offering your comments and suggestions to others.
It is really hard to judge this image because of it’s very low resolution. It is best to post images at least 2000 pixels on the long side. That combined with jpeg compression is really hurting this image. I like the composition. But as @Mike_Friel commented, the whites are blown out with no detail. To my eye, the whole image is over exposed. If you would post the camera data we could suggest alternative exposure settings. They should be easy to find in your post processing software. Again, welcome.
Welcome to NPN, Gordon!
What I do like in your image is the tension provided by the placement of the bird and the motion of the waves.
Maybe a shorter shutter speed and slight underexposure would have helped to keep some details in the blown white areas. But of course I don’t know the circumstances when you captured this image.
Thanks for sharing, I am looking forward to your further images.
Peter
Welcome to NPN, Gordon! This is a nice introductory image for our group. There are a few things I like about it; composition, the warm/cool contrast between ocean and sand, the nice wave action. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, it’s too small and jpeg compression is too high for us to really get a feel for it. Also, the highlights in the white wave are blown out which is something I struggle with when photographing ocean scenes. I hope you’ll share more of your work and take time to leave critiques for other photographers here so we can all learn from one another!
