Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Jim Z’s recent posts prompted me to dig into my way-back files to look for something worthy of posting.

This too is a backyard feeder photo, the perch placed near the feeder. Shot through an open window on a tripod with fill flash.

Specific Feedback

The small files produced by the EOS 10D don’t leave much room for cropping. This was shot in portrait orientation and cropped at the top and bottom, then a sliver off the right side to balance the composition.

Any feedback on the composition or any other aspect of this photo is welcomed!

Beautiful head turn, Jim, and the Chickadee has wonderful detail. My only suggestion would be on the perch. A lot of very decorative perches like this look unattractive in the out of focus areas. If there’s a way to orient them so more of them is in focus from your normal shooting location it helps a lot. Alternatively, since the perches don’t move, you can refocus after the bird leaves and take photos of the rest of the perch and combine them in processing (you don’t even need the fancy focus stacking tools usually).

Hi Jim, nice critical focus on the chickadee with fine details and exposure. A pleasing background too. Nicely composed.

I like this idea, thanks!

You’re welcome @Jim_Erhardt. The problem I have is remembering to do it!
