Black Silhouettes

Image(s)

Image Description

I was strolling a few years ago around the port of Thessaloniki in Greece, the city where I grew up, when I spotted this group of cormorants sitting on this structure. I don’t know if this is a piece of art or some old antenna, but birds frequently rest on it. Among the several shots I took, I liked this one the most, with the cormorant on the right spreading its wings. A print of this photo has been hanging in my living room for a few years.

Unfortunately, it’s no longer possible to recreate this photograph because an old navy ship turned museum is permanently docked in front of this structure.

I really like your Silhouette image. Especially the fish design and birds facing different directions. Perfect in B&W. I see this is your first submission. Welcome to the NPN. Great Photographers and everyone helping and suggesting things on your images. I think your image is very cool !!! I just recently did a silhouette image. Always for fun. Keep shooting and posting your vision. Peace to the Planet

Theodoros, this is a fine graphic view, with the birds shapes contrasting well with the various lines. I wonder how this would look if you showed a bit more detail in the pier, although I’m not sure that would be an improvement.

What an interesting pier or dock. I really find the broken piece of art to be quite an eye catcher. It almost looks like a fish and you know cormorants love fish. But like you, I love the cormorant with the spread wings. The pure white sky works well here and so does the almost pitch black pier. The ripples in the water break up that darkness and add a little bit of movement and life into the image. Wonderful. I can see why this is hanging in your home.

I originally wrote this:

“Here’s a version with a bit more detail, but I’m not sure I like it more. I feel that the image loses a bit of its silhouette-minimalism.”

But I didn’t press the “Post Reply” button and went for a walk. And not that I’m back and looking at it again, I think I like it more than the original. It’s funny how the brain works.

What a great image! You did a fantastic job framing the composition. I love the one with its wings spread on the right.

I support your decision to keep this a starkly bnw silhouette, rather than opening the shadows on the pier. It is such a playful image. Cormorants are the crowning touch.
