Description
Ottawa, Kansas
Back in Kansas for a few days for Jim’s family reunion. Birds everywhere, and millions of little grasshoppers and bugs in the grass. Incredible lightning storms this morning and yesterday, Love them!
It’s not even as hot and humid as predicted, so this turned partially into a photo trip.

Beautiful portrait of this bird, Sandy. I’m to hear the birds are so populous there. We haven’t had too many members on NPN from the plains states, so it’s been hard to tell.
I love the perch and background in this one. Just enough detail in the background to tell it’s grassland and the grosbeak gave you a great head turn.
Sandy:
This is an unusual color for a grosbeak. Never seen one even remotely close to this collaboration. The ones we have in our neighborhood are all orange or at least the primary color is orange. Sometimes is difficult to tell them apart from other Orange birds. Good job on the pose and depth of fields. The setting and backgrounds go together very well with the wing colors of the bird. Nicely done.
@Dennis_Plank
heat + high humidity = lots of bugs = lots of birds!
I was happily surprised!
David, the blue grosbeak is in the more southern states, across to the east coast. They are not as far north as Northern California, Oregon, or Washington. A gorgeous bird…
I’ll post a rose-breasted grosbeak soon - another vibrant grosbeak beauty.
The tones in this are so well done. That background is a perfect compliment to the blue on the bird. Love the composition and the size of the bird in relation to the image. Really nice!
Love Blue Grosbeaks! Nice pose and perch. Love the background too.
Hi Sandy, what a wonderful catch of this beauty. Wonderful blues on the bird and the surroundings are quite complimentary to the wing color. Nice pose with a pleasing head turn in our direction. Really well done!
Nothing wrong with this one. Warm tones and rich blues give this guy some ideal color pop. Comp is fine and like this one as presented…Jim
Sandy: another excellent image. The detail and coloration of the bird stand out very well against the muted background. Congrats on the well deserved EP.
