Blue Grosbeak

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Saw this grosbeak while photographing turkeys at the local state park. I think this may be a female.

Specific Feedback

Thoughts on the crop? I went for a loose composition to show the full leaves and the background color. I think image quality may not hold up if cropped in much further.

Technical Details

Canon R7, 200-800mm, monopod
ISO 4000, f14, 1/640s

Processed in DXO PureRaw 4 and Photoshop.

Hi Allen
The sun on the Crosbeak really helps bring out the feather detail and eye contact. As for the framing, you could take a little of the top.
Nice work.

Beautiful job on photographing this, Allen. I agree with Peter that the top seems very empty. I definitely understand not wanting to amputate any of the leaves to maintain a reasonable aspect ratio, but I think it might be necessary to make this image work really well. Perhaps something like this:

If you wish, you could remove the orphan partial leaf in the lower right.

I find myself partial to your original post, Allen. I like showing the whole upper plant and the wide environmental background. In either case the bird shows great detail. Well done.

Sweet little bird, on a nice perch. I’m uy adverse to cutting off edges of plants, but I thin
@Dennis_Plank 's crop works a little better.
The original is fine, though, as well.
