Description
A grackle seen at a Louisiana rookery in April. I usually don’t pay a whole lot of attention to these smaller birds at the rookery but I noticed some of these birds were hunting by hovering over the water lettuce. This female came right in front of me and started hovering so I was able to get a couple of inflight shots.

Any comments appreciated.
The BG is water lettuce not the shoreline of the pond.
Great shots! I love how sharp the bird is. And just because they are small doesn’t mean they’re not beautiful! My only suggestion would be to consider cropping a tad from the top of the first picture to balance that area with the bottom gap.
Hi Allen,
Good to see the Grackle in flight and the subtle BG enables me to see the bird clearly. Yes often we forget the small not so colorful common birds (Like Black Drongo in my region). Image 2 shows the nice shades of gray and back colors of the bird lit by the sunlight beautifully.
Excellent flight shots, Allen. These are fun birds regardless of how common they are. When I’ve been in the southeast I’ve always found them fun to shoot. The males put on a wonderful courtship/territorial display.
