Description
I visited Tawas Point State Park along the Lake Huron shoreline and was able to view lots of migrants including this male bobolink. The bird was about 75 yards out so this view represents the results of a very large crop. I wish the bird was closer which would have produced a far better image than what I presented here.

A fine capture! The perch is attractive and fits with the pose. IQ looks excellent for a distant shot and significant crop at high-ISO. I often find thermal turbulence to be a limiting factor in shooting birds at a distance. I wonder about pruning the two leaves coming in at the bottom and giving a touch of room to the one just touching the edge, but that’s a small deal.
I haven’t tried upscaling – need to check it out.
Jim, I have never seen or heard of this species so I am enjoying this shot. I love that you captured him with his beak open, guessing he was singing or calling out. Not an easy shot to capture, but looks like you did well, since he wasn’t willing to come in closer and lighting required a higher ISO than you would want to have for cropping. Nice.
He picked a superb perch, Jim, and you caught an excellent pose. The signs of the large crop require pixel peeping, so I don’t think they’re terribly significant.
Hi Jim, looks like the image quality held up well to the large crop. I like the simple composition with nice contrast with the bird and background and perch. Well done.
I sure wouldn’t delete it or bury it in the archives unseen if it were one that I had managed to capture, I would be excited to share it as you did here because the image quality and composition are really good to my eyes!
I like the almost high key look, it’s a bit unusual but it’s very appealing to me!
Hi Jim
Thank you for my first Bobolink, someday we will have a camera that can handle these great black, browns and whites, with out blowing out the sky. Until then weI will rely on the skill of photographer like Jim to present this lovely Bobolink.

I’ll just say wow, that’s one striking bird and I really like the branch it posed on. Good skills to get it in camera and then make the best of it in post. One thing I would be tempted to do is a bit of a CCW rotation. Not necessary, of course. A terrific image and like the others, I’ve never seen one before. I would love to hear that song.
Hi @ Kris. I checked the range and Bobolinks are all over the east, though you do have to find meadows or prairies. I know you’re in the north woods, but you shouldn’t have to go too far.
