Cactus Glowbe

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is Bad Hair Day all grown up. Shot it setting on a white mat board and used a curves layer to render the BG pure white. The individual flowers are about the size of a dime so the overall width is about 2 inches.

Specific Feedback

Also used a vignette to soften the edges of the cactus. Noticeable?

High key cactus! I love this. I think the vignette works. Love the easy the flowers glow. Definitely an artistic rendering and as such, I like it just the way it is.

Wow - definitely glow-y! Love the high-key treatment. For me, the vignette is a bit noticeable, especially in the lower right quadrant. Maybe going over that edge with a low opacity brush, back and forth with white and black (if using PS), to feather it more would make it less obvious. The upper right quadrant vignette doesn’t feel so obvious because we can see some spines poking out. Very cool!

I like the brilliance of the blossoms against the high key look of the cactus and white background. I do wonder what would happen if you brought the luminosity of the blossoms down just a bit to give them a bit more substance against that background? I like this as posted-just a suggested variation.

Bill- another very cool cactus! I like the high-key treatment, but , along with Dennis, I’d would like to compare a version with slightly darkened flowers for more “pop”. Just a bit washed-out, imo, as is.
