California Gnatcatcher

A very difficult bird to find. We were out with Charlie VanTassel at one of the reservoirs in the San Diego County region. I was pretty impressed that Charlie knew just where this bird was located even though he hadn’t been to this area in a while. Much of the environment near this reservoir is very similar. But the bird was right where he said it would be. This bird moves very quickly and doesn’t sit still for very long. I was very happy to get this one even though the light could have been better. I did clone away a few branches around the head.

Is this a composite: No
ISO 1000, 400+1.4 X, F5 .6, 2000th, about 30% of full frame, so a very large crop.

For sure a tough bird to find, you did good to get the pose and shot off . You’ve got some good field marks on this one.

Hi Dave

Good job on the focus and handling the difficult lighting, David. The bird looks fine. I’d be tempted to go vertical on this one and get rid of that brush on the right that has some pretty distracting areas.
