California Quail

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The quail was flying around from pole to pole. I like the first one for the pose and background, but included the second to show the back of the bird.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Beautiful job on the plumage of this guy, Allen. I really like the pose in the first and the background is excellent.

I really like the look of these handsome guys and I like both images a lot but there’s something about that second capture that really speaks to me. Thumbs up from me!

Hi Allen, I really like the first image. Feather detail, angled pose towards us, and showing off that dippity-do thing on its head so well. Very pleasing background. Well done.

Super captures, with a lovely perch and BGs! This guy looks like a poster child for Weight Watchers!

What exquisite detail! I love the front and back versions. Colour is perfect, BG 's both complimentary. I suppose the man-made post is not ideal, but it does not compromise these images at all.
Really fine work!

Both of these are amazing with the light and the modeling it brings to the photo. The bird looks to be present and taking up space which is hard to do in a 2D medium. The first seems to have a better level of saturation than the second which feel dull by comparison. The head turn is cheeky though - he knows you’re there and has to keep an eye on you. Maybe brighten the eye area slightly on that one? Just cracking shots.

Oh man, that first one is the bee’s knees for me. What a wonderful background to frame him up in and his little head feather is very prominent and the colors just mimic the colors of the bird. Great angle but I wish there was just the slightest head turn towards you. It’s a rather static pose because of the straight ahead look but not at all a deal breaker. The only slight distraction might be that ULC where the saturation fades into gray and the URC corner where the green along the edge goes a little bit brighter but both are easily fixed. Very impressive capture of one of my favorite birds. Here is what I did in LR with those spots.

Thanks, David. I like the changes you made.
