Self Critique

actually, I really like the image - the colors, the pose, the quality.

Creative direction

trying to find a good angle for the birds and get a look. questioning my crop(very light one) and positioning of the bird. Are the colors good? is grain too bad?

Specific Feedback

I would appreciate any technical and composition-related feedback.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500mm at 500mm ,ISO 5000, 1/2000sec., F/7.1. I was walking after trying to get birds in flight, so the settings are a bit off.

Description

I got caught in the morning rain, and while walking back to my place, I saw this hummer sitting on the path. I didn’t have time to adjust much - I just raised my camera and started to shoot. The initial image is not much different - only slight adjustments to exposure, vibrance, and saturation were made.

A very interesting perch for this hummingbird, Natalia. I think the crop works pretty well considering that I’d hate to lose any of that cool perch-it adds so much to the image. The noise doesn’t bother me, but if you don’t object to cloning, you might consider removing the bright green vegetation in the lower right. It seems out of place with the rest of the color palette.

I look forward to seeing more of your images and hope you will take time to comment on other people’s efforts.

thank you! I am trying not to clone out things and getting it correct in the camera. This one was too tight to move elsewhere to avoid bright green brunches. But it is also a good lesson to watch out for things like that.

I agree with Dennis about the green vegetation but maybe you could just reduce the green saturation and burn the area a bit and achieve some of the same effect. Just my $.02.

Very nice quality and interesting perch. I love the little feet wrapped around the leaf. The bright yellows are very distracting, to me. If you don’t want to clone, have a go with Hue-Sat or Selective Color (or both) adjustment layers in PS and mask out the bird. The BG is low in saturation and you may not need a very precise mask.

Hi Natalia, nice catch of this hummer at just the right place on the leaf. Agree with Diane on working the color of the green leaves in BG if you don’t want to clone. An intriguing image.

Hi Natalia
I didn’t see any issue with the nose and the framing works. The Hummingbird is sharp and has good color.
