Christina's World

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was shot in New Mexico about 4 months ago. The area is mostly warm eroded sandstone but this one area had what looked dry black mud. I was immediately drawn to its texture and with enough exploration I found a subject which contrasted with it.

Specific Feedback

The key, as I saw it, was to make the rocks contrast sufficiently and yet not overdo it. By that I mean pushed to the degree that it starts to look artificial. What do you think?

Any other criticism is welcome as well of course. Color. Exposure. Composition. Tonality.

Bonus points if you can make sense of the title. Lol.

Hi @Igor_Doncov, The shape of the light boulder, Andrew would be flattered. Nice image.

Hi Igor,
I most likely would have walked right by this scene and not given it a second look, but I am certainly glad that you did not. The contrasts between the rock and mud looks just fine to me as well as everything else in this intimate landscape. I like the visual tension that is created with the vertical lines in the mud and the horizontal lines of the lighter sandstone along the top edge. I am guessing that the rock is Christina Olsen crawling across the field in Wyeth’s painting. BTW, this image is wonderful.

Igor,

Wonderful rendition of the Andrew Wyeth’s painting as the rock is trying to make it home down in the ravine. I like the vertical lines at the bottom of the frame pointing the eye to where the rock is trying to go. Its an engaging photo.

Hi Igor
I really like this intimate landscape. There is a lot to explore. The rock is on the “right” place for me and looks natural. It matches the color on the top and gives the eye a “resting point”. Thanks for posting.

Yes Igor for me it looks a bit artificial, I feel an inconsistency between the two subjects. I prefer the photo without the stone because the dried mud is interesting and its neutral and muted color is beautiful. Anyway I like the photo.

I love this! The earthy brown colour palette is very pleasing, and I love how it’s so hard to get sense of the scale here. The rock could be huge, or it could be a tiny pebble. Either way, it doesn’t matter. I love the feeling of anticipation I get from this image. It almost looks like the rock is slowly creeping towards the edge of a cliff trying to peak at what’s beyond it.

Fascinating Igor. This is an amazing image as is, but the title sends it over the top.

Exceptional.

Igor, your title works perfectly with that foreground stone. I like the contrast between the stone and all of the mud with it’s cracks. The changes in color in the valley and into the distance look good and add a strong sense of depth.
