Clean up your act (with rework)

Update with a little crop, distraction removal and burning -

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

So up until yesterday it wasn’t buggy in the woods and I could sit and wait for these guys to appear. It doesn’t take long since we have dozens of them in the yard. They’re so cute, energetic and basically clueless that they make perfect subjects. This one was rooting around at the base of a fallen tree and came up all dirty. They groom themselves almost as much as they eat so it wasn’t like this for long.

Specific Feedback

They are tiny and live on the very messy forest floor so I did my best to find a clear shot with as few distractions as possible. Also worked on them in post. Anything else I can do to improve it?

Technical Details

Handheld sitting on the ground.

image

Lr for basic editing including an exposure bump, some masking to even out the background, vibrance & some distraction removal. Lens correction & Denoise.

You’re right, Kris, they are so cute and busy all the time! And his little messy face is just adorable. Not sure how to clean it up, but perhaps working on the brighter log in the LLC. Maybe try burning it down a bit to put more focus on the little his little face??

Now that is just too cute, Kris. He is cute in and of himself, but all the dirt on him just adds to this image.

Adorable!! Suggestion: sit out there a lot!!

I think it would be good to burn down the bright piece of wood on the right, and maybe a tiny bit of cleanup along the lower edge. You could probably put up a nice perch and setting for them (this one will do fine) and put out a bowl of peanuts and they will give you some great chances.

Wow. That guy is really cute. I also like the dirt on his face. I wouldn’t clean that up.

The only thing that distracts my eye is the green leaves at the bottom of the image.

The picture reminds me of a capuchin monkey I once photographed. It had just eaten some berries and I caught it before it could clean itself. Its cheeks were colored red.

Thanks @linda_mellor, @Shirley_Freeman, @Diane_Miller & @Jens_Ober - you’re right about those bright bits of wood and so I’ve darkened them a bit. The leaf on the LLC was too much to get rid of so I cropped and got rid of only a little. Does it work better?

And the clean up was that he needed to do it, not that I was going to do any in post. He’s just too cute all messy like that. Have tons more photos since they are so clueless and abundant.

Nice catch Kris - a real cutie! I like what you did in the repost - easier to focus on that cute messy face. Well done.

thanks @Allen_Sparks - it’s one of the more distinctive looks at this guy that I have. They’re pretty fastidious dudes so they don’t tolerate crud on them for long. More coming plus a video. I have a new microphone that does a combination of mono and stereo so the sound is a bit immersive, but requires me to massage it somewhat in editing. I will probably add some voice over and music, so that’s a lot of audio to mix and it’s taking me a bit of time.

Excellent on the distractions but I’d burn the stick even more – I think it could be made to almost disappear. I have surprising results for objects like that by hand-drawing the mask in Quick Mask mode then tweaking the mask after making a curves adjustment.
