The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This image was captured in June of 2024 on a trip my brother and I took to the White Mountains of NH where we met up with Ed McGuirk and Karl Zuzarte. Ed had kindly shared this location with Mike and I a few years ago and we came away with some nice images at the time. Our plan was to be standing in a field of lupines at sunrise, but unfortunately it didn’t quite materialize. Unbeknownst to us the field of lupines had been cut the day before so there were only small groupings left and we had some nice clouds; just too many of them for a sunrise.
As you can tell the light was pretty flat so I just converted this to B&W with Nik 6 Silver Efex.
Specific Feedback
Do you think the FG trees have enough tonal separation from the mountain in the BG? Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.
Technical Details

I really like the mood of mystery and tranquility that comes across from this image. It feels somber and yet dramatic and contemplative. Really nicely done!
I think you did a great job with this one, it suits BW very well to set the mood with the flattish lighting. Your timing was great with the fog/clouds! The mid ground clouds add just enough mystery to the background mountain! Way to make some lemonade when you can’t go with Plan A!
Layers upon layers upon layers. Yes, I do think there is enough tonal separation between the trees and the mountain. I think if this were mine, the only thing I might do is to darken the dark clouds in the top 1/3 of the sky - leaving the highlights where they are - to add a bit more drama and close out the top of the image. Great find!
Tasty lemonade, Ed. Great idea on the B&W conversion as the color was definitely lacking. Nice layered composition. I know you’re a “found” image kinda guy, but my thoughts are the same as @Bret_Edge. And yes, there’s enough separation in the FG.
Ed, this is a nicely moody look across this landscape. The foreground tree strike me as just right. However, I too think that some more contrast in the clouds could enhance the mood, maybe just not as much as Michael added…
@Michael_Lowe : Thanks for taking the time to do a rework as it looks great and good call on darkening the top clouds a little @Bret_Edge. I think I will incorporate that into the final result as I do like that little bit of extra drama.
