Description

Pantanal, Brazil

Piranha seem to come to the surface sometimes, and there are 100 hungry herons, egrets, eagles, storks, and kingfishers always on the lookout.

The Cocoi Heron is slightly larger than the GBH. It is distinguished from the Great Blue Heron by its completely black cap, light neck, and black thighs.
These were taken from a small boat on the river.

This is a very cool series of photos. Excellent detail and composition. Excellent lighting and action. Very enjoyable.

Excellent series. I’m impressed with the outstanding detail, the lighting, and how well the heron pops in the photos.

Very cool series, Sandy, though I think I’d present it in chronological sequence. To me it feels a little odd to have the one you chose leading off. Other than that minor issue, no nits from me on these.

Excellent captures with great action and image quality! Gotta love today’s equipment!

@Dennis_Plank I guess I put #3 first because I liked it best. (This is my first series)
However, it does make more sense to post them in order. Duh.

Excellent series of action photos. Great light. Do Cocoi herons stand in the water for long periods of time patiently waiting for food like GBHs? I wonder because of the prey being piranha.

@Jim_Gavin
Hi, Jim - Yes, they stand around for hours just like the GBH. They are quite common and we found them in almost every patch of marsh we passed. They eat every fish they encounter, but seem to be on the lookout for things further out near the surface, in addition to the fish around their immobile feet.

I wonder if the piranha ever take a bite of Cocoi leg.

@Jim_Gavin
Didn’t see any one-legged herons! :slight_smile:
Piranha are actually very tasty - we had a few for dinner…

This is a great action series Sandy. I really like the second image with the wings folded and the fish in the beak. Nice sharp images with all that action.

These are fantastic! Great action and so sharp!
