Cowra Japanese Garden

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I checked the raw file again, and it was as saturated per the original post. Maybe this is to do with the cloud cover making the light warmer. Either way, my repost has the yellows desaturated and the red desaturated and darkened.

We visited these gardens when driving home from Canberra. Of all the photos I took, this is the only one I feel stimulates the imagination due to the rocky path in the foreground and the grass area which winds to the background. Others, equally pretty, were too literal and by comparison only seemed a record of what we saw. The soft shade and perhaps overly yellow grass is due to high cloud that softened the light.

Specific Feedback

Does this image stimulate your imagination? Is the grass too yellow? I did reduce saturation till the foreground was about right.

Very nice, Rob. I like the way that half hidden path leads into infinity. The bright red flowered bush in the lower right has an awful lot of visual weight and for me it acts as an eye magnet. I think reducing the brightness a bit would help let the eye enjoy the rest of the image more.

Thank you. I will tone the red down and the yellow further. Rob

I don’t know if it’s my monitor’s fault but for my eyes the whole image is a bit over saturated then many nice details seems to be lost, also because of the highlights in the yellow-green lawn. Have you tried to darken it?

Hi, I have posted the version with both yellow and red toned down. This change is indeed an improvement.
Thanks once again.

I do like the change, Rob. It really mellows out the lawn and lets the eye flow through better.
