Crackling Lake

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Crackling Lake is part of the Porcelain Basin at Norris. I find it very interesting because of the shapes and colors under the water. I’ve taken its picture regularly, with only limited success at capturing the features that I like.

Specific Feedback

I like the colors and textures in the water here and how there’s some lower right to upper left eye movement.

Technical Details

R5, 24-105 @ 70 mm, 1/160 s, f/16, iso 800, tripod and polarizer. The polarizer lets the colors under the water show well.

Mark, the pallette of colours here is beautiful, and the shapes and textures of the minerals very compelling. Lots of areas of interest to explore.
My only possible suggestion might be to expand the crop slightly so the top of the steam is not cut off.
Wonderful image!

I agree that there is a subtle flow from LR to UL, and there are nice subtle contrasts of color and texture too. It looks like you’ve got some great abstracts in there too, just waiting to be picked off with a long telephoto.

This is quite a lovely image, Mark. I’m particularly fond of how the dark background in the upper left allows the white steam to really have presence, which I always find to be tricky. The subtle colors, interesting shapes, the few tree snags…all allow my eye to explore the image, then stop for a moment to appreciate a detail before moving on to the next neat detail. Well done.

Mark: This really captures the essence of the place. I’ve never really explored the Norris area and I’m not sure why not. I love the color palette here and the steam vent is the icing on a very nice cake. Well done. >=))>

John, I’ve spent many years trying abstracts from this lake with only limited success. I guess you’ll have to come down and show me what I’m missing…

LOL, while I love some of the small areas in your image and think there is potential there, I’m probably the last guy you want helping with an abstract. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
