I absolutely love sandhill cranes. They are so common here it seems like people don’t pay them much mind. I spotted these two on my way to work in a field next to a circle K. It was late July and I suspect these two were adolescents. Their parents kept a close eye on me as I approached and tolerated me for a short time before all four of them made their way to deeper into the field

I love the composition, Leon, though a touch more room all around might be nice. It’s always tempting to fill the frame, but it can make the critters look rather crowded. When I view the larger image, it almost looks like there’s a bit of posterization in the plumages and not much fine feather detail-was this a large crop?
Hello,
What a great pose! I love the colours of the birds and the grass they are in. The green in the top background is a great complimentary colour to the orange/red of the birds, though it may be helpful to lessen the yellow highlights in the green somehow as it is a bit distracting.
And I am jealous they are so common where you are!
And Happy New Year…may you capture many more great photos in 2023.
I, too, am envious you have these birds so close to you. I like the poses you captured and the grassy environment. I would agree with Dennis that they seem a bit tight in the frame.
Yes, it’s cropped in pretty drastically. I may be open it up a little but the background is full of cars and other man made things. I was sure to stay far enough away from them as to not stress them too much. 300mm just isn’t enough reach most times,
Very nice pose and colors, but I agree with wanting more room. Maybe possible to do enough cloning of the distractions to get a bit more canvas? It looks like noise reduction has cost some detail – maybe revisit that? I agree about the limitations of 300mm. The Canon 100-400 II is an amazing lens and is super sharp with both the 1.4X and 2X.
