Crow Portrait

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Since Peter suggested that I crop the last crow I posted to a portrait, I decided to go back and pick one where it was a bit larger in the frame initially. I don’t recall whether this was the same bird-I don’t think so.

Specific Feedback

Crop? How are the blacks?

Really nice portrait, Dennis - blacks handled perfectly, bright eye, fine feather detail and very complimentary BG.

Nice portrait Dennis. I love the feather detail and varying colors. The BG is very complimentary too.

I like the crop Dennis and the detail held up nicely. The blacks look good to my eye. Well done!

Nice portrait Dennis. Fine handling of the black feathers and a pleasing BG.

Oooh, I love crows. Corvids in general. They’re so interesting. Whenever I see a few crows strutting about they remind me of old time church deacons - disapproving of everything they see. Funny. I like this, but feel the highlights are a bit tamped down and could use a little raising. It feels crushed and muted in terms of luminosity. Sharpness and detail you have nailed!!

Brought it into Ps and couldn’t generate anything above a Lights 3 mask. That’s missing a lot of data on that end.

Fine portrait. The darks seem to be handled very well and the detail is excellent. I wonder if this is what was called a Northwest Crow before they lumped them in with American Crow. I like the background as well, the colors complement the crow nicely.
