Dancing tree

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I spent some time in a small forest near my house and decided to practice ICM which I just recently learned to do. I noticed this tree which was completely green in the middle of tall brown trees and decided to play around with it. I had several shots but I have loved this one because of the green rays on the left.

Specific Feedback

I am not sure about the post processing of it. As I said I don’t have a lot of experience with ICM so am not sure how to process it. I did darken the bright areas on the ground and doged the tree a little but I am not sure if there is a way to emphasize the green rays and if that even makes sense.

Technical Details

Sony a7c 70-300 iso 50 f/20 1/4 sec.

Tamar, I find it interesting that the darker trees of the forest look fairly sharp, while you’ve created a ghostly sense of movement for the bright youngster. Yes, there is a sense of dancing of your subject and viewing the larger verson does show some interesting ghosting in the rest of the frame. I think that a bit of burning-in on the brightest parts of the small pine is worth a try.

Tamar, I agree with @Mark_Seaver’s comments. I really like the illumination on the young pine. I am not at all familiar with the ins and outs of ICM, so I cannot comment on that. I would like to see more of the lower part of the pine.

Cool image and certainly well done, to me.

Thank you both for your comments. I brighten the tree quite a lot to emphasize it but maybe I didn’t need to. I am attaching a new version where I lowered the brightness I added before. In this edit I also show the full picture before the crop and as you can see there was a branch on the bottom that seemed to divert the eye away from the dancing tree. But any feedback on these two issues would be greatly welcome. Thanks

A nice set of ideas. Next time you play with ICM, try moving the camera from center to left as well as center to right and completely across the scene. Some of the resultant photos may agree with your mind better than others. Personally, I would have liked the streaks of “dancing tree” coming from the same side as the sun.
