While photographing small butterflies in my mint patch, I was following this Red-banded Hairstreak, when I noticed the Ambush bug lurking on the same flower cluster. Because of their positions on the flower I couldn’t get both fully sharp in a single frame (and the BF was moving constantly so a stack was impossible). Out of several shots, I like this one best because the ambush bug’s eye is nice and sharp, while the bf is only slightly soft.
Persistence looks like it paid off, again, Mark. Wonderful photo. I’ve not heard of an ambush bug before, but can’t help wonder, who won?? Really enjoy the composition you’ve gotten with these two and the OOF background totally helps make the bug and butterfly the center of attention. Nicely seen and captured.
Very nice, Mark. Both look sharp enough for me. The two of them on the same flower gives this image the tension of something is about to happen. I am pulling for the Hairstreak. Hope he made it out of there. I know that is the cycle of life, but hate to see a predictor about to get his prey. Very nice capture of the moment.
Hi Mark,
Viewers need to look at the large version. Details are nice and the ambush bug may score a meal. This is an awesome shot…Jim
Mark: You met the challenge of single capture most excellently. Terrific find and a marvelous shot. Many kudos. >=))>

This Hairstreak flew off unscathed. In my limited observations, I have yet to see one of these Ambush bugs get a hairstreak. I have seen them devouring skippers, cabbage whites, and sulphers…
