Dewdrops

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was back on June 29 before the heat had arrived in Bozeman, Montana. I drove up to Hyalite Reservoir up in the mountains to look for dewy flowers and was not disappointed. In fact, on this morning, flowers still in the shade had frost on them! I had been toying around with the smoothing and radius filters in Helicon before processing this image and just couldn’t get it right. After reading a bit in the tutorials on the website, I adjusted a few settings and had to do very little touch up on this. It might not show up at this resolution, but if you zoom in on the dew drops at the outside edges, you can see a mini image of the treelined meadow and blue sky!

Specific Feedback

There are a few halo areas remaining in this…are they bothersome? Is the background too obscure?

Technical Details

Nikon D850
Sigma 105 mm Macro
ISO 64, f/7.1, 1/400 sec

I took 75 images but selected just 49 of them to stack in Helicon Focus. I used Method B (R=5, S=5)
Processed in Lightroom Classic CC

Paul, this is super - the past, its prime flower, shows emotion. The BG is a wonderful green that isolates the subject. The due drops are a major plus.
This is great as is.

Excellent, Paul. The slightly hazy areas don’t bother me a bit and the plain background is fine. I can see this printed about 30 inches tall-it would be utterly awesome!

Even a flower past its prime can bask in the dew – very lovely! I don’t see anything to criticize in the stacking. There is enough detail to conceal any imperfections and since the flower itself is imperfect, I don’t think the source of any imperfections is important.

Fabulous. First the flower itself - great subject and dew is a photographer’s best friend; up there with fog. Nice framing and crop and the stack looks good to me. Cool about the little reflection of the meadow that I probably wouldn’t have seen or at least realized was there had you not mentioned it. The sidelight is subtle, but effective and gives this additional modeling and dimension. Bravo!

Paul: Great find and a superb capture. I applaud your persistence with the stack. With my short attention span I have to control myself to take as many as 14-15 shots for a stack. Refractions in drops are always great treats and I wish they were readily apparent here but still this is a terrific result well worth the effort. >=))>
