Clear ice, especially when it forms like this from repeated wetting, creates lenses that seem to “distill” light into the basics of dark to light, sort of a frozen Zone system. Add to that the distortions from the curvatures and I sometimes enjoy enlarging these images and then carving them into a dozen smaller ones, amazed at how they can each stand on their own.

John, this is a really striking image you’ve captured. As you say, there is a wide range of light generated from each piece and it almost looks like glass. Nice composition too, but that dark object in the background is a bit of a distraction.
I agree, this is a very interesting image. I think you got the exposure and contrast just right. To me all of the upper “layer” is distracting. I like what you described as enlarging the isolating sections, which gives a different look and feel. I might consider cropping in tighter, highlighting the ice formation and (to me) bringing out the ice snake head peering over the ice:)
