Distilling light

Image(s)

Image Description

Clear ice, especially when it forms like this from repeated wetting, creates lenses that seem to “distill” light into the basics of dark to light, sort of a frozen Zone system. Add to that the distortions from the curvatures and I sometimes enjoy enlarging these images and then carving them into a dozen smaller ones, amazed at how they can each stand on their own.

John, this is a really striking image you’ve captured. As you say, there is a wide range of light generated from each piece and it almost looks like glass. Nice composition too, but that dark object in the background is a bit of a distraction.

How right you are. It is, I think, a shadow. I’ll work on it.

I agree, this is a very interesting image. I think you got the exposure and contrast just right. To me all of the upper “layer” is distracting. I like what you described as enlarging the isolating sections, which gives a different look and feel. I might consider cropping in tighter, highlighting the ice formation and (to me) bringing out the ice snake head peering over the ice:)

@Jim_Lockhart and @marlindmills , Here are tweeks to the image as you suggested and, thank you both, much improved.

Nice improvement @JohnSnell !

@JohnSnell, Like what you did. Very Nice!
