Very nice capture. I love the background, the pose and the eye looking at the observer! I always wonder with a composition like this, i.e. the bird pointing directly to the right or left, if there should be more negative space in the direction they are pointing. My one minor suggestion would be to try putting more negative space on the right side and see if you like it better.

Good point Alexander.
My “set up” i.e. seeds, etc were on the right of the bird so I cropped it tighter than I would have liked. Might should revisit that with a more extensive edit.

I like your backyard setup, Allen, with the clean background and interesting perch. Excellent detail in the woodpecker and nice pose.

Sweet image of this Downy, Allen. That perch is getting a real workout. I like the depth of field you’re getting with that lens.

That set up is paying off big time. I love Downies, but don’t think I’ve ever photographed one at all, much less this well. The alert, attentive posture and that clean background really shows off the shape and structure of the plumage. I especially love the tail. They are so cute and a very welcome addition to any feeder scene. Keep up the good work.

Nice looking Downey, Allen. He must have some forest land near you. These guys really like the trees. But very fortunate to have the species in my neighborhood. The male species like this one is quite colorful.
