Elabana Falls and Rework and Rework

Latest Rework

This time, cropped again. Cropping the image square threw the waterfall almost dead centre which I am trying to avoid. Foreground dodged and greens subdued a little.

Rework

Slightly different crop. Exposure raised but maintaining shadows. It doesn’t look much different now I’ve posted it.?

Image Description

Walking 7klms through the rainforest to get to the falls was quite beautiful, although very hot. Climbing the hillside on the way back to the campsite was a different story!

Elabana is classed as a “permanent” waterfall, but low rainfall has resulted in a not so wonderful flow. The waterfall is hidden at the bottom of a ravine. A quiet, secret spot.

Glenys, this looks like a very quiet, inviting, secluded spot. I do think that cropping to 4x5 from the right would put more attention on the falls and the various greens around the falls. Is that 7 km round trip or one way? Can you swim in the pool that fills the bottom of the frame?

Thanks @Mark_Seaver . Round trip to the falls is around 7klms. Yes. You can swim in the pool at the bottom of the falls, but when we were there is was quite murky from the lack of rainfall.

Thank you for the suggestion of cropping to 4x5. Vertical? I had a look at 4x5 vertical and 5x4 horizontal. There are so many different crops that might work with this image. I started to lose the feeling of where I wanted the image to go. This little waterfall doesn’t scream for attention. I want it to pull you in. I would like the image to whisper not scream, if you get what I mean.

I understand whispering totally and agree! I was thinking vertical with much of the dark green leaves on the right gone. That would let the brighter green of that tree and the sunlit leaves below it act as the framing and that would match the bright set of leaves in the upper left corner.

Hi Glennie, this is quite a lush, beautiful spot you’ve found and I like your composition a lot with the lacy, delicate falls surrounded by the greenery with varied hues and shapes. One thing I would wish for is to brighten the whole scene; increase the exposure somewhat while retaining the shadows, which add a sense of mystery to this location. I think your long, hot hike was well worth it,.

Glennie: What a beautiful scene! I actually prefer your original comp. The rework centers the falls a bit too much for my liking and I don’t think the additional area adds all that much although it certainly fits into the lush color palette. I pretty much like the exposure as is as it creates a feeling of being in a dense quiet forest. Good on you for making the hike and for a fine capture. >=))>

I’m with @Bill_Fach in preferring the slightly off center falls in the original, plus I’m not sure that the extra bit of bright green in the upper left adds to the framing. As I look further, I think that some subtle dodging of the dark reflections in the water help lead the viewer’s eyes to the falls, but then I’m a big reflections fan… Have you tried a square crop, where the bright greens on both sides become framing elements?

Thank you @Mark_Seaver , @Bill_Fach and @Mark_Seaver ! All your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I’ll think I’ll let this image rest a little and if need be, come back to it.
