Enchanted Forest at Quinault Rain Forest

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was trying to capture the beauty and magic of this rainforest. My attempt was to capture the “whole” area of a very chaotic and complex forest.

Specific Feedback

I struggle with deciding if this is a worthwhile image. When I look at it I feel is a snapshot but not telling a story. Others (loved ones) have given me positive feedback yet I struggle with seeing this image as special in any way.

I like this and I definitely think it’s a worthwhile image. The water flowing through the frame is both interesting and beautiful. I do wish though there was a bit more space on the right side because right now, with the water all on that side, the visual balance of the image feels a bit off.

You’ve captured a beautiful forested setting with lively greens and lush mosses along with a cascading stream to draw the eye through the scene. The colors in the vegetation look good to me and you’ve created a natural vignette using the vegetation around the bottom of the scene which I like. However, with the stream being so far right in the frame, it creates a slight imbalance for the composition to my eye. If this is not full frame and you have more canvas to the right, I’d be tempted to add some to the right and also perhaps crop some off the left side of the image. If you don’t have any canvas on the right, I would do a crop placing the stream more in the middle of the frame to better balance the composition.

Thank you both for your feedback. I went back and lessened the crop and I see what you are saying. Thanks again.
Here is the updated crop.

Lorraine, I think your original composition was fine. It balances the water nicely against the lush green branches on the left. In a way I think they’re the most important element of the story. I added a vignette to push attention away from the edges. I darkened the overall image slightly although I can see it darker still or leave it as you originally have it.

Hi Lorraine,
This feels very natural to me, and I like all the crops and vignette options mentioned above. It might be my monitor, but the water has a magenta tint to it. It’s probably the water movement and underlying rock, etc.

I’m not sure what you use for processing, but in LR, you can shift the highlights to a slightly warmer tone or brush the water and shift the hue there or even desaturate it. I hope someone will correct me on this if it’s just my monitor and you shouldn’t touch it. Use your judgment if it looks fine to you.

These kinds of images are so lush and wonderful, they may me homesick while I’m on vacation in the desert!
