Washington Rain Forest

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an old photo that I just came by again. I remember I was wandering through the rain forest somewhere in the Olympic peninsula and was so overwhelmed by the intensity of the growth of everything. So much all in one spot. I’m guessing I shot so fast because it was a bit windy, and I chose f/4.0 to emphasize the tree branches in the foreground.

Specific Feedback

I’m still overwhelmed by the chaos! Like most forest scenes, there is so much going on it is difficult to find a good composition. I think this one works, do you? Is the sky too blue, too dark? Also, i’m not sure about the luminosity of the photo as a whole. Part of me thinks it should be darker to make it feel more moody, more overpowering. What do you think? Any other suggestions welcome.

Not too chaotic for me! I love the shapes of the FG trees and the backlight on the lichen! The leaves in front of those branches tie them in with the BG. I wonder about just a bit more detail in the darks, but maybe that would spoil the mood. The blue feels a little off – maybe less cyan or less saturation?? Lovely image in any case!

I like the forms of the trees in the foreground, Tony. With the backlight and what looks like a clear sky, I don’t think “moody” would work too well-need to go back in the rain for that one. I do agree that the blues in the sky look a bit off, particularly for this environment where there’s usually enough moisture in the air to mellow out the blues quite a bit. The forms of the tree carry this for me. I’ve tried shooting there several times and getting anything I liked was really difficult so I applaud you for this one.

Tony: Having wandered through the Hoh Rainforest a couple of times I hear your quandary. I think you did well here. I’ll make it me three with @Dennis_Plank and @Diane_Miller regarding the blues but on my monitor there is enough detail in the shadows. The backlighting works nicely. Well done. >=))>

I find the sky peeking through vegetation to be an over and over again battle here in the PNW. My first rule of thumb is to avoid it, but sometimes it’s not possible.

With that said, the twisted maple branching makes a great subject here, an dthe greens look great.
