Enjoying the View

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I found this Cormorant standing at the bank of a little stream of water at Chincoteague NWR back in October last year (just getting around to editing those photos). I have found Cormorants to be skittish, so I was very careful to keep my distance, and take a few shots and move slowly until I knew I could get a shot that could be cropped a little. I just didn’t want to scare it off.

Specific Feedback

I like the marsh grasses and how the wind was blowing them in the same direction he was looking. Does it look alright? Are they too bright?

Technical Details

Canon R5 with Sigma 150-600 mm lens at 1/2500, f6.3, Auto ISO (800) HH. Edited in LR, cropped some as I didn’t want to get too close and scare him off.

Nice composition, Shirley. I, too, like the grass and the watery background-gives the image a nice sense of place. Good detail in the cormorant with a nice head turn. I wonder if in processing you could bring more of the blue out in the eye.

A lovely image of the cormorant, Shirley It makes a very nice portrait with a good look at the blue eye. I really like the reed background as well. Very well done.

Very nice!! Wonderful sharpness and feather detail and I love the blue/brown color palette. The grasses look just right to me. I don’t know what you cropped off (or if you got more in a different frame) but it might be good to see the whole bird. (But I do know that reality doesn’t usually cooperate with what we would like.)

Good to see you having some quality time for photography!!

Thank you @Allen_Brooks @Dennis_Plank and @Diane_Miller. No, Diane, unfortunately he was down near the water so the bank didn’t allow me to capture all of his body. So this was the bottom of the frame, I just cropped some from the sides and top, but not a lot.

Very nice . I think everybody’s comments on this image were right on. You got a really good look at the head with a good head turn and a fairly reasonable background. The reads are outstanding.

Hi Shirley, very nice detail on the bird with enough of a head turn to see the eye. I think the reeds look good and the background is pleasing overall. Well done.

Cormorants have wonderful, blue-green eyes and you got it captured in the shot. I like the BG and overall comp. A fine image of this skittish cormorant…Jim
