Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Created at Cobble Beach in Oregon. If you’ve been, you know that it’s a fascinating place with many tide pools. We had great fun exploring, but it’s the kind of place that overwhelms on first visit: so many things, and I had no basis for approaching things photographically.

Here, I wanted to make sense of this large bunch of mussels (?). My eye is attracted to detail and small things, so I singled out this one shell for a shot.

In retrospect, it reminds me of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, thus the title.

Specific Feedback

It’s a portrait of a mussel: Does it engage the viewer and invite them to explore a bit?
Does the light make sense?
Does the viewers eye wander a bit before coming back to the subject?
Is the crop too generous?

Technical Details

Nikon D850 with a Tamron 28-75 f/1.8 lens. Wide open at 75mm. Single shot.

I know that beach at Yaquina Head. My friend and I tried to go there a few days ago and after going all the way down the stairs decided we just couldn’t risk going any farther with our physical limitations. I’ve always enjoyed going down there and am glad you could get there. Always something interesting. I like the way the light is hitting the mussel and how you’ve highlighted just the small area of focus. I love his expression, looks like he’s smiling.

Gary: Count me in with @Chris_Baird in knowing that beach well. Terrific lighting and I really like your shallow DOF approach which complements the light fall off perfectly. Good find, good composition, great result. >=))>

Gary, I really like the shallow DOF in this image. Very well done! I have never been to Oregon, but it is on my bucket list. Maybe one day.
