Ferruginous Takeoff

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Yesterday morning I had the good fortune to see, and photograph my first ferruginous hawk of the season here. They are my favorite hawk and this is the third year in a row that this one’s shown up in the same, precise location (I know from its leg band). I snagged a takeoff moment and since the only color in this shot was its yellow bill, I took a look at it as a B&W and I liked it.

Specific Feedback

Cropping okay?

Really nice take-off pose, Dave. Maybe a bit more room on the left to fly into?

Excellent pose, Dave! I like the B&W treatment, but you might want to experiment with something I occasionally do - leave the yellow bill intact for a bit of contrast. (The bill is small in the frame, so it may not matter much.) Really nice detail , eye, and handling of the whites.
Very fine image!

Really nice pose you caught Dave - dramatic take off. Adding some room on the right might help as Dennis mentions. The details on the bird and perch have a painterly look. I am assuming from post processing. A fine catch.

Really Nice Image. I love the tone and the pose of your subject. Perfect in Black and White. Maybe vignette the image a little. A little on the corners. Really intense face and great feathers. Really captured the moment. !!!

BW works well with the image. Pose is excellent and more room on the LH side will strengthen. You may want to take the noise suppression down a notch. You do not need much noise reduction with the Z9 especially at an ISO of 900. Otherwise, a nice shot!..Jim
