Fiery Dahlia

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

From a local Dahlia farm several years ago. Fairly static composition…the light is a little flat and may lack artistic vision but I hope it expresses the intensity of the colors that inspired me.

Specific Feedback

-does the centered composition work?

Bruce, it does look fiery. Love the colors. I’m sure finding a Dahlia farm to shoot at was really fun. The center composition works fine for me with the bloom. Nice details in the flower.

Bruce: Fiery indeed! The reds are pretty badly blown but that does give it more impact and toning down the red saturation makes this an entirely different image. I like the square crop and think it works well for this subject. Nicely done. >=))>

With the radial symmetry of these flowers an occasional head-on image works very well, Bruce. I like the way this one fills the frame and the color is a treat.

Thanks all for the comments. Shirley yeah it was a small, maybe 2 acre Mom and Pop dahlia farm that was closed to the public a couple years ago unfortunately.

The square format looks good. The reds are oversaturated on some of the petals, but a minor feature of the image. I think that you could increase the strength of the shadows followed with a slight bump up in contrast for a final tweak. Otherwise, looks pretty good…Jim
