Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On my first evening at Harris Beach I did some beachcombing and came across this scene and decided to shoot it in landscape and portrait. Not sure which one I like best so your comments welcome. >=))>

Specific Feedback

Both of these are HDR. I liked how the setting sun illuminated the opening but no single frame gave me enough detail to work with. Sometimes I miss the old Velvia slide days but without this technology I’m not sure this would have been possible.

Very nice find on the beach Bill. Both versions are nice, but my preference is the horizontal as I think it gives the viewer a better sense of place with the rock formation. The light in the triangle is a nice touch and adds depth to the scene. I could also see a little crop from the left side; not necessarily better, just another option. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking.

Bill, while the light through the arch is clearly the star in both, they give very different feelings. I’m with Ed in preferring the horizontal as it shows off how the massive rock formations and how weathered they are. Yes that bit of darkness on the left is a bit of an eye magnet, so a crop of some dodging seem fitting. The vertical, is all about the long view out to sea, with the bit of green at the base being a good addition.

I like Ed’s crop. The change is significant.

I spent an evening at Harris Beach over the summer, and even shot sunset very near to where you were standing when you created this image. None of my images of the arch were worth a darn. Yours, however, is fantastic. I do prefer Ed’s crop but the light on the arch is just so pretty. Lovely image.

Bill, a very neat find during your Oregon trip. The light on the arch is exquisite. I prefer the landscape orientation, and I think Ed’s crop is just about perfect.

I missed this one - very nice! I do like Ed’s crop that eliminates that dark area in the LLC. The warm light in the arch contrasts so well with the cool shadowed cliffs.
